In our continuing communication with the city on the Skateplaza of Springfield, we received the following today:
The City of Jacksonville Department of Recreation and Community Services (note: that's a really long way of saying "Parks Department" - Derek) is currently working on the Hogan's Creek Greenway master plan. This plan would serve as a blueprint for all the parks along Hogan's Creek (including Schell Park). This is moving pretty quickly and we are trying to get it to the point where the master plan will be 30% designed once its completed. Everyone in the department is excited about having Skate Plaza and want to make sure we can maximize all potential funding. At any rate, having the Friends agreement will allow your group to begin to move forward on behalf of the park.
What this means is that with a Friends of the Park agreement, we at SkateSoS are able to move forward with plans, surveying, etc for the park.

In two short months, the 2008 Atlantic Tropical Storm Season will come to a close and many duly concerned homeowners will be left with lots of lumber that they hadn't been planning on buying until Fay and her pesky siblings decided to come tapping at our windowsills. Many of us will be left with too much lumber to store until next season and may be in a bit of a lurch over what to do. Never fear, the great minds here at the Skateplaza of Springfield have been straining our synapses in order to solve this dilemma (honestly, I think Phil popped a vessel).
Here's your simple solution: instead of going through the hassle of running the usable lumber back to your local lumber yard or home supercenter and standing in a long and ultimately unpleasant return line, make a material donation to the Skateplaza of Springfield. Bring your lumber to us. The lumber doesn't have to be unused or full-length; as long as it's a usable length (say 3' or longer) we'll take it. Sorry, scraps won't be appreciated. In return we, as a subcommittee of Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council, Inc. (an IRS 501(c)3 non-profit), will provide you a receipt for you in-kind donation. Heck, we'll be rounding the corner on tax season again soon enough that you won't have to wait all that long to make use of your nifty and wonderful receipt.
So, whaddaya say? If you're interested in making a donation of lumber, click the Contact Us link at the top of every page on this site (or click the link you just read in this sentence) and leave details for us to contact you back or call the SPAR Council office at 904-353-7727.
Oh, yeah, money donations are always appreciated and the PayPal link (also on every page of this site) still works as well as it ever has No,
we aren't shifting focus away from a plaza and building a wood park
instead. We are building a portable skate park to use for fundraisers
and contests to benefit the Plaza. Our goal is and will always be to build a world-class public skate plaza right here in River City.

Most of us are able to build a mental image of ramps, bowls, pools and such when we hear the skatepark moniker, but the skateplaza concept as the next step in skateboarding evolution is a bit tougher to visualize. Hit our FAQs (look at the menu on the left) for text descriptive. For visuals, we bring you video!
This first video is of opening day at the Plaza at the Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It has been celebrated as one of the premier plazas in the world, incorporating elements for both street and vert skaters, and they did it all in 45,000 square feet. Jacksonville's Schell Park has over 80,000 square feet to work with:
Next, we have opeining day at Rob Dyrdek/DC Shoes plaza in Kettering, Ohio. This one is geared exclusively toward the street skater and is another great example of what skaters want that most traditional parks don't provide:
Watch the videos, chew on them a little, and envision something similar but unique at Boulevard and 6th streets.
